Characterisations for Audition purposes

MAX BIALYSTOCK:

A third rate Broadway producer who has to sleep with little old ladies in order to fund his shows. A rogue but with charm. Cunning, brash, excitable, loud and bossy. He needs a big personality and excellent comic timing. This has to be natural to him not put on; he needs to be funny in ‘real life’. An excellent character singer and well-co-ordinated mover. Playing age 50’s.

LEO BLOOM:

A nerdy timid accountant. Conservative, short on confidence but sincere. He is meek-mannered and still carries around a piece of childhood blue blanket for security. At the beginning of the show, we need to believe that he is afraid of his own character. Some movement required, including some tap. Playing age late 20’s upwards;

ULLA:

A knockout, drop-dead gorgeous Swedish blonde (wig available). Ideally needs to be tall, svelte, demure and a glamorous stage star. She is hired as a secretary to Bialystock & Bloom, but later becomes Leo’s love interest. She needs to be a good mover with a good body. Playing age late 20’s/late 30’s;

FRANZ LEIBKIND:

An insane neo-Nazi playwright and pigeon fancier. A staunch German with a thick German accent. He needs to have good legs as he appears throughout in Lederhosen. A good solid character actor required. Playing age late 30’s/late 40’s;

ROGER DeBRIS:

He is Broadway’s worse director and a cross dresser. All his movements are affected, outrageous with grandiose affectations. He is a true ‘drama queen’. Over-the-top without becoming a caricature. Some movement required – tap would be a plus. Playing age late 40’s/mid 50’s;

CARMEN GHIA:

A wiry, over-protective gay ‘common-law’ assistant and partner to Roger. He runs Roger’s household. He is totally outrageous and over-the-top. A stereotype. Playing age late 30’s;

HOLD ME-TOUCH ME:

An excellent character actress to play this ‘dirty minded’ little old lady. Any age.

Leo’s boss. A short tempered tyrant. Playing age 40’s.
