Character Listing: Please note that most characters have a playing age of 20’s and must all be good dancers. Those exceptions are advised at the end of the character.
THE JET BOYS RIFF The current leader of the Jets. He is hot headed up to a certain point but always remains in command. He is intelligent yet slightly whacky. He is the driving force behind the Jets. Playing age 18 – 28. He needs to be a good dancer. TONY Best friend to Riff and a former leader of the Jets who has turned to an honest life. He is good looking, self-assured, passionate but gentle with it. He has outgrown the Jets and is looking for more out of life. He needs to be a good mover. Playing age 18 – 28 ACTION He is the most aggressive of the gang – acts first and thinks later. A cat-like bundle of fury due to a bad home life. A very strong character needed. A-RAB He is homeless with an alcoholic father – needing the feeling of belonging to a gang. He enjoys everything and understands the seriousness of nothing. BABY JOHN The youngest member of the Jets. He needs to have the ‘baby’ face look. He is vulnerable but tries desperately to play the ‘big’ man. He is in awe of Riff and Tony. Good dancer. Playing Age late teens. DIESEL He needs to be physically imposing. Big and slow. BIG DEAL A bespectacled self-styled expert. He is the brains within the Jets SNOWBOY Good looking, smooth and suave Other Jet BOYS All will have named parts and be part of the gang. Looking for a variety of characters and personalities. Ideally will be fairer and more clean cut than the Sharks.
THE JET GIRLS
ANYBODYS The tomboy. She wants to be taken seriously by Riff but it is only at the end of the show that she comes into her own. There is nothing ‘womanly’ about her – she is misunderstood and unaccepted. GRAZIELLA Jet girlfriend. Very impressed with her looks. She adores looking at herself. VELMA Another Jet girlfriend. Young, sexy and slinky. A Marilyn Monroe cardboard cutout. Other Jet GIRLS All will have named parts and be part of the gang. Looking for a variety of characters and personalities. Ideally will be fairer and more clean cut than the Sharks.
THE SHARK BOYS
BERNARDO Maria’s older brother and leader of the Sharks. He is handsome and proud. Seemingly a cool character but he is filled with passion and anger. He has a sardonic chip on his shoulder. Playing age 20 – early 30’s CHINO Maria’s quiet shy and intensive suitor. He comes across as unassuming but after Barnardo’s death we see a more serious and angry side to him. Need to see a great vulnerability to Chino. PEPE Bernardo’s Lieutenant. Other SHARK Boys Again, all will have named parts. Strong, passionate characters needed. Ideally will have dark looks and have a certain Puerto Rican quality about them.
THE SHARK GIRLS MARIA The beautiful sister of Bernardo who has recently arrived from Puerto Rico. She is excited and enthusiastic yet obedient. She has a stubborn inner strength which evolves throughout the show. She needs to be an excellent all-rounder. Playing age 18 to 25 ANITA Bernardo’s intelligent, flashy and sexy girlfriend. She is compassionate, fiery, wise and oozes sensuality. She needs the maturity against Maria’s naivety. An excellent sharp dancer required. Playing age mid 20’s to mid 30’s ROSALIA Demure, not too bright. She misses Puerto Rico. She sings the solo in ‘America’ CONSUELA A tough Shark girl who, at the moment, has dyed her hair blonde.
Other SHARK Girls Again, all will have named parts. Strong, passionate characters needed. Ideally will have dark looks and have a certain Puerto Rican quality about them.
THE ADULTS
DOC Fatherly owner of the drugstore. Long Suffering, he needs to be able to portray both comic and dramatic. Playing age 45 – 60 SCHRANK Ruthless yet sometimes charming. He is superficially pleasant to cover his venom and bigotry. Playing age 40’s – 50’s KRUPKE A large goon-like police officer. Friendly without many brains. Playing age 30 – 45 GLADHAND An overall cheerful nerd. Looking for a good character actor to play this fidgetey chaperone. A great cameo role. Playing age 30 – 40’s |
